Fall is officially here. A month ago we were basking in the heat of the sun, and now we’re digging through our closets to find our coziest sweaters. While summer is for long, lazy days with little or no agenda, for most of us, fall means getting back into routines. When it comes to skin care, fall is a great time to reset and recommit to a consistent regimen. A simple and healthy skin care routine has 3 basic steps: cleanse, tone, and moisturize. Let’s get into it!
Cleansing
You should clean your face twice a day, once in the morning and once at night. Cleansing the skin removes dirt, make-up, dead skin cells, environmental pollution, and helps unclog your pores. Your cleansing routine should be gentle, and if you find it to be a relaxing experience that also engages your senses, that’s a lovely bonus!
Toning
Many people ask me why toning is a necessary step in the skin care process. Toning is an extension of the cleansing routine; it removes any remaining dirt or residue. It also hydrates and refreshes the skin, restoring the skin’s natural pH and creating the perfect surface on which to apply moisturizer.
Moisturize
The final step is moisturizing. Each and every skin type benefits from a great moisturizer, as regular moisturizing protects and nourishes the skin. Simply select a moisturizer that suits your skin type to help keep everything nice and balanced. Plus, keep in mind that moisturizers penetrate more effectively when the skin is moist. So don’t skip over steps 1 and 2!
Daytime moisturizing and evening moisturizing are slightly different, so you may want to choose different products for each. In the evening, our pores are more “open” than in the morning. This is an ideal time to feed your skin with antioxidants and other active ingredients that contain essential fatty acids and vitamins to support cellular repair while you sleep.
Sticking to this simple 3-step skin care routine – and taking a few minutes each day just for you – really does make such a difference, both inside and out.
